The Arrival
The official visiting hours are:
9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
The caves are open from Tuesday through Sunday. However, entry and visitor movement may be regulated before the official closing time.
For that reason, arriving at 4:30 PM does not provide enough time for a meaningful visit.
The trip also involves more than entering the monument. Visitors must account for:
- The boat journey from Mumbai
- Boarding and disembarkation
- The walk from the island jetty
- The uphill staircase
- Ticket checks
- Time inside the caves
- The scheduled return journey
Consequently, an early departure is usually the better choice.
The Archaeological Survey of India identifies Elephanta Caves as a protected World Heritage monument located on an island around 11 kilometres northeast of Apollo Bunder in Mumbai.
